New York being a crater

There's a commonly held belief that New York City is supposed to be a crater in Fallout. However, I've been unable to find the lore explicitly saying so.

Has anyone else found evidence to the contrary? Fallout Bible, developer commentary...?

There's no official statements that inform what happened to New York city, the only thing the bible says is regarding the nuclear meltdown, and even then, most of The Bible is no longer considered part of the canon.
