Familial

Familial (adj): of, or relating to, a family; "family-like". This is the correct word, "familiar" is not; yet I see someone had to revert it yet again. Please don't change it just because you are unfamiliar with the word. Deadlykris 23:57, July 12, 2010 (UTC)

Yogi

Just bought FO3 after playing NV. You're missing a name reference. Yao Gui --> Yogi, and is the name of a bear. <_> Why all the fighting on this? It is so obvious. See the Archived version of the page for the discussion of the Yogi reference. Kris (talk) 15:51, July 16, 2010 (UTC)

Seriously people, stop adding this reference! It is not valid. Kris (talk) 06:02, July 20, 2010 (UTC)
you know this how? reference to where it is said to be invalid?
Considering just how many people make this connection unless there is word of god from the game makers I'd say it is a reference LOL
It doesn't matter that isn't how its pronounced in Chinese, it looks enough like it to seem likely to be its origin. The Chinese definition alone doesn't really lend itself well enough to this animal to be the sole reason IMHO. And considering the other references in fallout this seems perfectly in line with the rest of the game.
If the game makers did say it was not a reference can you post where rather than simply reverting it?
and considering some of the other speculative references on this site ex: threedog "The name of the character Three Dog might come from a previous character played by his voice actor Erik Todd Dellums, called "Dog 3". Three Dog shares similarities to very many DJ characters from movies and real life, Wolfman Jack chief among them." which are unconfirmed by makers and may be coincidental as well but were allowed through while yogi is constantly taken down the removal of yogi and requirement that this reference be proven rather than disproved seems more based on personal opinion or that somebody just doesn't like it...so I put it back. If there is a good reason it isn't valid please share. If not then it shouldn't be held to higher standards than any other reference listed in this wiki.
I dunno, for me, the fact that the word is Chinese is enough to stop looking at anything else it may hide. --TheBearPaw 12:47, December 21, 2010 (UTC)

Unless they're smarter than the average bear there's no reference.JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 12:49, December 21, 2010 (UTC) They sort of are. Ruzka certainly is.

Another connection is species. Not only are Yao Guai and Yogi similar looking names and both bears, but they are both the same type of bear. The Yao Guai are descended from the area's black bears. Yogi and BooBoo are brown phase black bears. StormPetrel

Not Yao Guai.Yaoguai (妖怪 pinyin yāoguài) or yaomo (妖魔 yāomó, literally, "demon") or yaojing (妖精 yāojīng, literally, "sprite" or "seductive") is a Chinese term that generally means "demon". Yaoguai are mostly malevolent animal spirits or fallen celestial beings that have acquired magical powers through the practice of Taoism. The evil ones are usually referred to as guài (literally, "freak") or mó (literally, "demon") in Chinese. Their greatest goal is achieving immortality and thus deification. In Journey to the West, the demons seek this mostly by the abduction and consumption of a holy man”The bear does not appear to be attempting to achieve immortality, so its probably being used to mean “malevolent animal/demon” But this definition doesn’t seem to be enough for them to choose it for the bear. Especially considering fallout 3 takes place in America with all the other things named in English. It's just a reference that works on more than one level, they're oh-so cleaver over there at Bethesda, Yes, it doesn't mean bear in Chinese, it's merely a name given to the creature to describe its nature as a big scary mutant enemy, and there are enough Chinese in the game to make it plausible this animal would be named in that language rather than English, however there are dozens of names for the bears that they could have come up with, Chinese, English or otherwise. They obviously picked this one for a reason Yao Guai means demon. So why make them bears, if not to make a horrible play on words with Yogi Bear? Yao Guai is not pronounced like Yogi, I know. But it looks similar enough as text, That's why I call it a "horrible" play on words. So many people have seen the connection that I would be inclined to believe it was intentional. If Bethesda has denied the reference as claimed in the archived talk page for the love of god cite a source lol, I searched extensively and was unable to find anything showing they have. ~~
Agreed with the above. Yao Guai (妖怪) is more than certainly a Chinese derivation for, roughly, monster or demon. Another word that means demon in Chinese is 魔怪(notice the same second character) and roughly pronounced 'Mogwai' which was used in the film 'Gremlins'. Three Dog's advice may have been inspired by the fact that you shouldn't feed a Mogwai after midnight, although in this case, Yao Guais should not be fed at all... I admit the link is a bit weak. Bethesda may have wanted to put a Chinese name in the game and decided against using something that had already been in popular culture already.
With all the other monsters having names like Rad Roach, or Death Claw, or super mutant why pick Yao Guai for the bears unless to make a bad reference? It looks like Yogi and has bonus points for meaning something in Chinese that fits.

Otherwise it may as well have been a "Death Bear" or "Rad-Bear" or something else more similar to other creature names.StormPetrel

I think people who remove the references to "yogi" are silly. Silly enough to believe that this obvious reference to the yogi bear is coincidence. In fact they are probably really stupid, I fear. There were to many good arguments so we can't ignore it. --217.85.106.214 18:37, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

How does Yao Guai sound like Yogi? i always though Yao Guai was pronounced Yow Gwuy(Like a lisped "guy") which sounds nothing like yogi, i cant believe people are even debating this, there's clearly no reference --.22-Shooter (talk) 23:52, July 6, 2012 (UTC)

Tactics Section

Sould these two points

  • Although Yao Guai are very fast, they can't turn quickly so when being attacked the player can easily sidestep to dodge the Yao Guai.
  • Although deadly and strong, Yao Guai are killed with ease by deathclaws and albino radscorpions. be moved to a tactics section because i personally do not think they belong in the notes or trivia section

Mange?

Someone added a note about the Yao Guai suffering from mange due to radiation. Where did this come from? Is the info extrapolated from their scarred skin they supposedly have been scratching or smth? If so, that's just some personal speculation as the wounds may be from past battles or anything else. Therefore, I removed the bit. --TheBearPaw 11:02, August 28, 2010 (UTC)

U R MISSING REFRENCE YOGI BEAR, YAOGUI BEAR. LOL SO OBVIOUS BUT PAGE LOKED(Y?) CANNOT FIX LOL U'L NEED TO DO IT 4 ME

Ruzka

Is it worth adding Ruzka to the list of Yao Guai variations, or is he just a normal Yao Guai with a name? Yes-Man 10:30, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

We did that a while ago, before we agreed that she's a creature characters, which means that she stays her own page. Same goes for Ghost of She. Kastera (talk) 17:07, June 14, 2011 (UTC)

I think we should at least mention Ruzka in here in case someone is looking for some sort of "unique yao guai". Considering it is a variant of yao guai, i don't suppose it would hurt to add Ruzka to the variants, in addition to keeping the official Ruzka page.

Notable yao Guai

I feel that having a notable yao Guai section, regardless of how silly it may be, is better than mentioning Ruzka in the opening paragraph, which I feel looks wrong and seems poorly written. Richie9999 (talk) 03:31, February 23, 2013 (UTC)

This is the only thing that killed me in Fallout 3. For real. 67.142.173.21 14:31, July 22, 2013 (UTC)

Yao Guai and Mole Rat Companions

Northwest of Vault 101 there is a yao guai and a mole rat wandering together. I came upon them being attacked by a robot. Sadly the mole rat was killed before I was able to kill the robot. Having the Animal Friend perk I went up to the yao guai that was acting strange. It lay down on the mole rat and cuddled it twice while making low soft noises. It then wandered off. It appears obvious this was specially done AI as a sort of Easter egg. BTW, I've got a screenshot of this. Oceaxe (I'm sort of the human equivalent of Tabitha) 10:30, May 24, 2015 (UTC)

  • Checked GECK. Yao Guai have this snuggle hug animation Oceaxe (I'm sort of the human equivalent of Tabitha) 09:48, May 25, 2015 (UTC)
