In 2066 the U.S. Navy Missile Cruiser U.S.S. Ebon Atoll was accidentally sunk by the U.S. Navy Submarine U.S.S. Interference during the Battle of Anchorage. The Interference mistook the Ebon Atoll for an enemy vessel and shot it with a nuclear torpedo killing all on board. It is one of the worst U.S. Navy disasters since World War II.

Behind the scenes
The USS Interference incident is an apparent reference to Interplay Entertainment closing Black Isle Studios (ebon means black,and an atoll is similar to an isle). Black Isle Studios was responsible for Fallout and Fallout 2, the later prior to the adoption of the Black Isle name.
