Fallout Wiki

As you're all well aware, a few weeks ago this wiki has been forked, leaving 2 Fallout wikis with at that point containing the same content. The old bureaucrats and most of the admins moved to the new wiki, The Vault; a few admins stayed behind.

This has left us in a fairly vulnerable position, especially since Porter, our template and script specialist, moved to The Vault. At this point he's still providing some support and also GhostAvatar gave me permission to use his images. In return they've used some of our images and page content now.

Because this will more and more become an issue, especially when the new Fallout game is released, I'd like to reach an agreement with The Vault on using each others content.

Personally, I'm ok with them using our content, with the proper attribution. For images it's easy enough, with a copyright template when categorizing it. Copying page content is a bit more difficult as when to add attribution and when not. But I think when copying a (part of) a page, attribution can be added in the summary box.

I hope The Vault will have the same opinion. Porter has created a similar forum thread there so things should get clearer soon.

So, do we allow The Vault to use our content? What do you think?

  • Yes In the short to medium term it is in the best interests of both sites to share content - in some sense such a thing already exists in one direction at least... However long term having two almost identical wikis, with identical content, is in no-ones interest. Both sites I think need to become clear in their communities minds what the long term direction looks like. Agent c 02:14, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes However, we will have it edited our way, it feels dissapoinitng just copying and pasting pages. MysteryStranger: Trust in the power of Infinity! 11:41, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes I don't see no harm in this. For both wiki's are for the community.ToCxHawK 21:24, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
  • Neutral You have to admit there is something slightly odd considering the split. Y'know, when Ausir picked up his wiki and walked out with it? I'm with Agent c in that it's fine for now while everyone's getting their feet under them, but there needs to be long term consequences. ---Person of Refinement 04:35, December 21, 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes This is a great idea, it will be extremely beneficial come Fallout 4. So it's a yes from the bear. --HighFiveBearLeftHighFiveBearRight 04:45, December 21, 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes Of course, we need to keep the same quality standard as always and this will just be a bigger help for us. KiwiBird 12:03, December 21, 2011 (UTC)

* Neutral Not having access to this wiki's images, information etc. was always going to be an issue for the Vault, I feel that they should have considered this before the split. However, I understand that we'll also have problems, so I'm neutral. Grammarlad(talk) Vote placed after closure. Agent c 16:49, December 30, 2011 (UTC)

@SigmaDelta - Merging? We've just split! And it's irreversible I'm afraid. And not being able to use each others content would slow down both wikis quality improvement, especially when a new game is released. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 00:58, December 16, 2011 (UTC)

yes I know. But my point is if we put our content together, why have 2 wikis? Why not just one more complete one? These are simply my thoughts. ΣΔ 01:07, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
We do our work here, they do theirs on The Vault. It's just the question of how much are we willing to help each other out? In the past weeks I've already had good experiences with Porter helping out with templates and GhostAvatar allowing me to upload his images here. It may be not much on your thoughts but it saves me a lot of work anyway and will improve this wiki faster. And the same goes for The Vault, although they're not using as much content from us as we from them. But that can very well change once people here get more experienced and especially with the release of a new game. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 01:44, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
You're right. You're quite an orator Js. I'll change my vote, you've totally convinced me. Once I become even more experienced, then I'll probably understand the significance of content exchange better. ΣΔ 01:47, December 16, 2011 (UTC)
  • @Agentc - I think pretty soon already we will be heading different directions. Porter's always full of ideas and will change the look, format and appearances on The Vault's pages everywhere. A lot of things will stay the same of course, with images and various plain content. For example, if a terminal entries or holodisk page is created on either site, with descriptions and so on, we should be allowed to copy it from each other. For source files then I agree that not sharing would be a bit silly; but it just seems odd that have/are going to have such a strong relationship between the two wikis - given that we are in some senses each others' greatest competition. Agent c 03:44, December 22, 2011 (UTC)
Looks to me like we agree on setting up an general agreement with The Vault. I've taken a look at their forum thread, I'm not sure what the outcome will be there. I'll ask GhostAvatar about it. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 17:05, December 27, 2011 (UTC)
