Toxic waste is a unwanted detritus that is harmful to its surroundings and/or those within its surroundings. They come in a a variety of shapes, sized, colors, states of matter and effects. Some of which are irradiated. Potential mutagenic effects may appear.[1] Harm from exposure can be mitigated or even avoided by wearing the right safety equipment,[2] or simply avoiding contact all together.[3]

Background[]

To safely inter such hazardous material, it was usually stored in containment barrels in secure facilities.[4] This was the intent at least, though many of these barrels would rust or leak over time.[5] One of these facilities was what became known as the toxic caves, northwest of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Exposure to toxic waste was not limited to storage facilities, as decades after the Great War toxic waste can be found freely flowing in the ruins of Los Angeles, including a moat for the Gun Runners fortress in 2161.

Toxic waste was also dumped illegally by unscrupulous individuals and organizations. Such as the case with Grafton Steel, whose intentional ignoring and obfuscation of safety and environmental rules caused the deaths of dozens of people.[6][7] This however was not the complete cause of the region of Appalachia known as the "Toxic Valley." A disgruntled former employee, a chemist named Darius Angler, tried to blow the whistle on the company's flagrant illegal activities. In grief over his brother's death and increasing paranoia, and insanity, due to the conspiracies that he uncovered, he created a concoction that, when placed in the furnace of the mill, would turn into a toxic white powder that would expose the company. He prepared a manifesto to ensure that the public would learn of why he did what he did and attempted to infiltrate his former company. In the end he would have to use the Great War as cover. He succeeded and the smokestacks started spewing toxic dust, turning the entire region toxic.[8]

Even the smelly skunks and ugly opossums. Can you say opossum? Good. One thing all the boys and girls in Pioneer Scouting hate is toxic mutagenic waste. Can you say toxic mutagenic waste? It's yucky stuff. Pioneer Scouts used to pick up trash to earn a badge. That's pretty futile now. Can you say futile? I knew you could. You can earn a badge by cleaning up nasty old toxic mutagenic waste and putting it in a containment barrel. Can you say containment barrel? I knew you could. Now run along and earn that badge. Toxic mutagenic waste may cause spurious genetic modifications, some of which may be harmful or even fatal."
