The United Kingdom, alternatively referred to as Great Britain, is a country located in western Europe.

Background[]

History[]

On October 14, 1066, the Battle of Hastings was fought in England as part of the Norman conquest, led by William the Conqueror.[2] In 1215, the Magna Carta was signed by King John of England and English barons, greatly limiting his authority as king and placing more power into the hands of the feudal government. On March 25, 1634 Lord Baltimore of the Irish House of Lords dispatched the first colonists to Maryland. They would land near the area that would later become Point Lookout aboard two ships, the Ark and the Dove.[3]

On April 19, 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord occurred, starting the American Revolutionary War, fought between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the newly formed United States, made up of thirteen of its North American colonies. On July 4, 1776, the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress, explaining to the British why they were at war with them and announcing the United States' intent to independently govern itself. The war would continue until 1783 with the Treaty of Paris, which confirmed American independence.

The United Kingdom was formed in 1801 with the Act of Union between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland; the Kingdom of Great Britain itself being formed in 1707 with a similar act of Union between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland (Wales at the time being considered part of England). The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the latest incarnation of a British state, was formed after the Irish War of Independence, resulting in a part of Ireland referred to as Northern Ireland remaining with the United Kingdom, and the other becoming an independent Irish state known as the Republic of Ireland.[4]

The United Kingdom also fought on the side of the Allies during World War II, as one of the four leading countries of the alliance.

The United Kingdom controlled many overseas territories, and at its peak led the largest empire in human history. Due to the divergence, the status of the British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations is unknown. As of 1945, such areas included Canada, parts of the Europe and would become the nation of Israel.

The relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland in the Fallout universe is unclear, since Ireland did not officially declare itself a republic or leave the Commonwealth of Nations until 1949. It is likely that these events still transpired, considering that the national flag of Ireland is found multiple times in the Commonwealth. This flag, while created in 1830, did not enter common usage until Ireland became a republic in 1949 and the flag was adopted as the national flag of Ireland. The capital city of Wales is also unknown, as Cardiff serves as the capital in the real world, the city did not become the Welsh capital until 1955.

Dialogue such as pre-recorded lines spouted by Mister Handy robots suggests that the country was ruled by a queen in the years leading up to 2077.[5]

23rd century[]

Currently, there are no officially sourced details about the state of the British Isles following the nuclear apocalypse. However, Allistair Tenpenny is confirmed to have been born there around 2197, later immigrating in the early-to-mid 2200s to seek his fortune in the Capital Wasteland, indicating the possibility of some measure of human civilization still being present.

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition Wasteland Census p. 86: "Mister Buckingham is Vera's best friend, a Mister Handy robot with the disposition of a British butler. Mister Buckingham is stationed in the hotel 24/7 and minds things while Vera is away."
  2. Emil Pagliarulo: "Allistair Tenpenny came to the Capital Wasteland from Great Britain to seek his fortune, so that alone tells you that the U.K. was also hit in the war. And if he came to U.S. to succeed, that says a lot about how screwed up Europe must be. So we just allude, a little bit, to the state of the rest of the world. We like to leave a lot to the players' imaginations, and somebody like Tenpenny serves as a catalyst for those thoughts."

  3. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p. 60: "Allistair Tenpenny an 80-year-old Englishman turned American entrepreneur, the man who discovered the tower saw it as an opportunity to provide residents with a standard of living enjoyed by the affluent in the days before the nuclear Armageddon. A rich eccentric who's bored with life and looking for new challenges, he enjoys sniping at wasteland creatures, ghouls, and the occasional visitor from his suite atop Tenpenny Tower."
