There's something about this area. I can't put my finger on it, but just like the Mall, there is an unusually high concentration of super mutants.Butcher, about Vernon Square

Vernon Square is a section of Washington, D.C. in the Capital Wasteland.

Background

The square serves as an entryway to its namesake metro station. There are four streets that make up the perimeter, including Mount Vernon Place, Abernathy Street, Salem Street and Basso Boulevard to the north, east, south and west, respectively.

The citizens of Underworld attempt to explore the area, but Doctor Barrows shares that patrols traveling near there return with injuries, if they return at all.[1] Butcher and Reilly report to the Lone Wanderer that there is a high concentration of super mutants in the area, second only to the number found in the Mall.[2][3]

Layout

The location is surrounded by piles of rubble and contains super mutants throughout. As part of Vernon Square, several additional locations can be found, including four metro exits. Vault-Tec headquarters, Takoma Park, and Vernon Square East are situated to the east.

In the middle of Vernon Square, a Delta IX rocket is found in an irradiated crater, near a sewer entrance. The entrance into the Takoma Park/Vernon Square Metro is near the crater by a blue car. Nearby, a toppled radio mast links the second floor of Our Lady of Hope Hospital to the Statesman Hotel. To the left and up the stairs from these conjoined buildings are another metro tunnel and Freedom Street station.

Notable loot

Notes

Additional super mutants are scripted to spawn in Vernon Square when the player passes through certain areas, even if previously cleared.

Appearances

Vernon Square appears in Fallout 3 and is mentioned in the Fallout 76 update Wastelanders.[4]

Behind the scenes

Vernon Square is based on the real-world city square and neighborhood of Mount Vernon Square.

Reilly: "If I wasn't asking for your help, I'd tell you to stay away. It's thick with super mutants. I don't know why. Butcher, our team medic, has always suspected something is in the area they are looking for or being attracted to. The only place worse I can think of is the Mall."
