Walter Griswold is the deceased former leader of the Trappers raider gang in Appalachia.

Background[]

During the Great War, Walter Griswold survived in what would become the Savage Divide region of Appalachia. When the survivors of the area's ski resorts formed into raider gangs,[Non-game 1] Walter became the leader of the Trappers, a gang that made improvised explosives and booby traps their specialty.[1][2] The Trappers were part of an uneasy alliance with the other gangs that made up Appalachia's raiders, to protect against the other factions and creatures of the region. As part of the alliance, the gangs kept their best loot in a safe and split the key amongst the five gang leaders.[3]

Walter Griswold and the Trappers decided to make their camp at the Devil's Backbone, a rock formation just outside Huntersville.[1][4] At some point, after hearing a commotion coming from the town, Walter sent a scout to investigate. The scout came back reporting of some "big ol' green 'uns" ransacking the town. Wanting to see for himself, Walter and the scout returned to the town just in time to see the super mutants fighting the Brotherhood of Steel. When it appeared that the Brotherhood was going to lose the battle, Walter and the scout retreated to their camp. Walter began to record himself explaining what happened and appealing to the other gangs for help in clearing out the super mutants from Huntersville, before being attacked by the super mutants at their camp.[4] The attack was repelled, and the Trappers began to plan for a counterattack but waited for reinforcements. The reinforcements never arrived,[5] either because the other gangs never received Walter's call for help (Rose claims she and the Cutthroats never heard what happened to the Trappers) or because the other raider groups were already spread too thin and were unable to provide assistance.[1]

The camp was attacked again, but this time the attack was more damaging: the super mutants captured Walter and several other members and took them to Huntersville. The surviving Trappers, leaderless and angered at the perceived betrayal of the alliance, fled the area,[5] while Walter himself died in the town proper, where his corpse can still be found years later.

They had a camp out near the Devil's Backbone so they could keep an eye out along the road from the southeast. We never did find out what happened to them. We were spread pretty thin by the time they disappeared. Someone, or something, probably got to them. Maybe they left a note behind or some other clue. They were real outdoorsy types. Liked camping and hunting. Be careful searching the camp for their piece of the key. If it wasn't obvious, they were really into traps."

  2. Rose: "This one time, Chuck-he was the guy who came up with this crazy idea-laid out explosive bait along the trail after a raid. When the Responders came looking for us with their tracking dogs, well...Let's just say the hounds lost their scent. You know, because their heads were blown off. Ah whatever, you get what I'm saying."

  3. Rose: "Ah! Oh good, it's just you. What do you want? I feel like I trust you enough now to let you in on a little secret. My old Raider pals left a cache of treasures behind when they all checked out. Problem is it's locked away and I can't get in there. Double problem: No one trusted each other enough to give anyone complete access to the treasure. So they split up the key. See, each gang's leader had a holotape with their own personal password on it. Find 'em all so I can patch 'em together and make the master key. It's more technical than that, but you wouldn't understand. Then, we'll have ourselves access to all that wonderful treasure. I'll probably even give you a fair share of the loot. Promise. Check out Blackwater Mine first. That's the last place we heard from Freddie Lang, the leader of the Blackwater Bandits. Pretty sure she had a terminal there. Might be worth a look-see."

  1. Fallout 76 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide p.5: "RAIDERS
The Raider groups of Appalachia were bloodthirsty psychopaths who terrorized the other survivors, taking whatever they wanted from them. Expert scavengers, the Raider groups of Appalachia were surprisingly ingenuous when it came to salvaging old world technology. After the bombs fell, several wealthy tourists on Appalachian ski holidays reverted to their baser instincts. Selfishness turned to violence, and these entitled elitists became vicious Raiders."
