Purified water Fallout: New California
You're thirsty, aren't you America? Not for knowledge or power, no. I'm not speaking metaphorically. You're thirsty for clean, fresh water. Hmm? Water is the foundation of life. But here, in the Capital Wasteland, indeed the entire country, water is polluted. Irradiated. Deadly.— John Henry Eden

Water is a consumable item in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Fallout: The Board Game.

Variants[]

Dirty water[]

FO3 dirty water

Dirty water is the most common type of water found in the wasteland. It is drawn from the tainted lakes, rivers, and puddles. Unlike purified water, this will give radiation, which can be cured for a fee by a doctor or through RadAway.

Purified water[]

Fo4 purified water

Purified water is water that has been purged of any radiation, making it safe to consume. It is not quite as common in the Capital Wasteland as it is in the Mojave and the Commonwealth, often being found in first aid kits and more advanced settlements.

Aqua Pura[]

FO3BS aqua pura
Gameplay article: Broken Steel

Aqua Pura is purified water that has been bottled from the water being taken in from the Tidal Basin and purified at Project Purity.

Aqua Cura[]

FO3 dirty water
Gameplay article: Broken Steel

Aqua Cura is regular irradiated water disguised in an Aqua Cura bottle that Griffon sells in Underworld to cure a plethora of illnesses that ghouls often suffer from. Griffon also takes the real Aqua Pura and sells it to other wastelanders at an inflated price.

Holy water[]

Holy water is an irradiated variant of Aqua Pura that is produced by Mother Curie III.

Cactus water[]

Irradiated water[]

FO3 dirty water
Gameplay article: Fallout: New Vegas

Irradiated water is a variant of dirty water in Fallout: New Vegas. It has been even exposed to stronger levels of irradiation and thus it irradiates the drinker three times as much as dirty water. A limited amount of bottles can be found and they are mostly located in highly irradiated areas.

Mass purified water[]

Mass purified water is the name of a recipe in Fallout: New Vegas which allows multiple amounts of purified water to be produced by the Courier:

¹ The recipe produces four bottles of purified water.
² The glass pitchers and surgical tubing are returned to the player's inventory after crafting, and can be re-used.

Rushing water[]

Drugged water[]

Fo4 dirty water
Gameplay article: Fallout 4

Drugged water is a pre-War variant that was drugged with sedatives by HalluciGen, Inc. It was used by HalluciGen as part of their test subject intake, and once it had taken effect the subject was then taken by lab personnel for testing.

Institute bottled water[]

Institute bottled water
Gameplay article: Fallout 4

Institute bottled water is a purified variant that is bottled and distributed by the Institute. It can be bought from the synth cafeteria worker.

Boiled water[]

Fo4 dirty water
Gameplay article: Fallout 76

Boiled water is craftable water in Fallout 76. It has been strained and heated over a fire. Although safer than dirty water, it is not as clean as purified water and still inflicts some radiation damage. Boiled water is instrumental in the crafting of many recipes, including teas, soups, and medicines.

Toxic water[]

Fo4 dirty water
Gameplay article: Fallout 76

Toxic water is highly irradiated water in Fallout 76. It can be collected from especially unclean water sources, typically ones that are brown and orange in color. It is the most unsafe of any water variant in the game, and cannot be boiled or purified.

Notes[]

  • In Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, drinking from standing water, such as lakes, rivers and puddles, can restore between 2 and 30 HP.
  • In Fallout 4, drinking such water will restore some HP as well as increase the irradiation level of the player character.

Behind the scenes[]

Each bottle of purified water features the text "H2O" handwritten on the label instead of "H2O." This format is incorrect (at least according to IUPAC nomenclature), as chemical formula numbers are written in subscript (Xy), not superscript (Xy).
